On Sunday the 15th of October 2017, the local community gathered again to remember Australia’s worst industrial accident, the collapse of the West Gate Bridge in 1970. This year marked the 47th anniversary of the bridge collapse, which claimed 35 lives.
The Memorial Park at which commemorators gathered is located on the actual site of the bridge’s collapse. It was built not only to memorialise those who lost their lives but also to increase community awareness of workplace accidents.
As chairperson of the West Gate Bridge Memorial Park Association, Tectura’s Director, Serdar Baycan, developed the project brief, initiated the design competition and oversaw the development of the park, which now acts as a perpetual reminder to government, industry and trade unions to provide a safe workplace for employees.
