Tectura Architects are proud to announce that the new gymnasium at Mulgrave Primary School has finished construction as of the 21st of September 2020.
With a planned opening at the start of term 4, the facility is a much needed upgrade to its undersized predecessor, allowing the school to host local sporting groups and integrate partnerships with community groups and activities. Also housing a performance stage, kitchen and storage space, the building is a dynamic student and community hub, enabling student agency and a variety of events to be hosted both indoor and outdoor. Large operable doors facilitate this indoor-outdoor connectivity by extending the building’s program out, promoting a culture of hybrid indoor-outdoor learning.
Building on the cartographic qualities of the site, where buildings and external circulation form a map of Australia, the building positions itself as the Great Barrier Reef. The building’s external facade cladding references the natural coastal physical threshold where the sandstone cliffs transition to white water then the blue of the ocean. Internally, brightly coloured articulations of coral through pops oranges on the walls and portal frames create a vibrant space filled with vitality.
The project has been a great collaborative effort between Mulgrave Primary staff, senior leadership and students as well as the VSBA and the Tectura Principal Consultant architectural design and consultant team.
